As Long Beach's 29th Mayor, Rex Richardson has transformed the city's greatest challenges into unprecedented opportunities, bringing leadership rooted in personal experience with working families' struggles and a proven commitment to expanding opportunity for all residents.Mayor Richardson's story reflects the American Dream realized through determination and community support. He moved around a lot growing up. His mother was a union welder at General Motors — her own mother had integrated schools in the South. His father served in the Air Force. The family moved when work moved, and stability wasn't something Rex could take for granted. He came to California on a Greyhound bus. After graduating, he worked as a community organizer with SEIU Local 721, advocating for blue-collar workers and building the coalition skills that would define his career. At 25, he became the first person in his family to purchase a home — a house in North Long Beach, where he and his family still live today.Rex's path to public service began as Chief of Staff to Councilmember Steve Neal, where he built bridges between neighborhood associations, labor unions, business groups, and faith communities — a signature approach he's carried into every role since. In 2014, he won his City Council race with 73% of the vote, becoming the youngest council member in Long Beach history. During his council tenure, he brought President Obama's My Brother's Keeper Initiative to Long Beach and created the PATH program, which steers young people away from incarceration and toward job training and education.In 2022, Rex was elected Mayor of Long Beach — the first African American to hold the office in the city's history.His record reflects the values he was raised with: work hard, deliver results, and make sure opportunity isn't just for the few. Under his leadership, Long Beach has created more than 4,100 good-paying jobs, achieved its first decline in street homelessness in nearly a decade, hired more than 250 new police officers, approved over 5,000 housing units, and is preparing to host 18 Olympic and Paralympic sports in 2028. Long Beach was named the Most Business Friendly City in LA County — besting 87 other cities.Rex serves as Chair of the LA County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency, past President of the Southern California Association of Governments, and Advisory Board Member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors — carrying Long Beach's priorities to regional and national tables. Long Beach is doing all of it — and it's working.In 2025, Long Beach recorded:<ul><li>A 26% reduction in homicides compared to the prior year.</li><li>A 36% reduction in shootings — down 52% from 2021.</li><li>A 40% reduction in burglaries, including a 50% drop in commercial burglaries.</li><li>Zero officer-involved shootings — the lowest in verifiable recorded history of the Long Beach Police Department.</li><li>The lowest overall crime rate in 20 years.</li></ul>To get here, Rex:<ul><li>Recruited more than 250 new police officers — the largest three-year hiring effort in department history — and opened a new Police Academy training center to host larger recruit classes.</li><li>Delivered a new state of the art police academy training campus with capacity to train 100 recruits at a time.</li><li>Secured Measure A, protecting public safety staffing and preventing more than 100 additional cuts to the department.</li><li>Restored Rescue 12 to Fire Station 12, cutting emergency response times in North Long Beach by three minutes — a campaign promise delivered.</li><li>Expanded fire and ambulance staffing citywide to improve emergency response times for all residents.</li><li>Created the Police Oversight Commission, improving transparency and strengthening accountability.</li><li>Expanded Community Crisis Response teams, deploying clinicians and mental health professionals to calls that need care, not enforcement.</li><li>Created the Roadmap to Downtown Recovery, improving safety, cleanliness, and small business vitality in the city's core.</li><li>Established the Office of Youth Development and launched the S.T.R.O.N.G. Long Beach families see homelessness every day. They've watched it grow for years. Rex Richardson isn't pretending that's not true — and he's not accepting it as inevitable either. He's the mayor who built the city's first municipal homeless shelter, launched the first-ever youth shelter, and delivered Long Beach's first decline in street homelessness in nearly a decade. He's just getting started.Under Rex's leadership:<ul><li>Long Beach achieved consecutive years of declining street homelessness — including its first decline in nearly a decade in 2024 and a sustained 17% reduction in unsheltered homelessness through 2025 — made possible by expanding city-provided shelter capacity by 84%.</li><li>Rex built Long Beach's first municipal homeless shelter, Atlantic Farms Bridge Housing Community, with 125 beds and plans for 240 additional units, plus the city's first permanent Youth Shelter &amp; Navigation Center — providing safe housing and wraparound services for young people ages 18–24.</li><li>He launched Upstream LB, Long Beach's first homelessness prevention strategy, securing more than $15 million annually from LA County Measure A to keep families housed, provide rental assistance to vulnerable seniors, and protect residents from losing their homes due to federal cuts.</li><li>The Long Beach Housing Promise, developed in partnership with CSULB, LBCC, and Long Beach Unified, is expanding affordable housing options for students and families — investing in the people who will carry this city forward.</li><li>More than 5,000 housing units approved — the most in any three-year period since the 1980s — helping make Long Beach more affordable than other parts of the region.</li><li>As Chair of the LA County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency, Rex secured over $16 million flowing directly to Long Beach annually to keep families housed.</li><li>Rex expanded mobile access centers, mental health clinics, outreach teams, and safe parking sites — meeting people where they are, with care and long-term solutions.</li></ul>Rex bought his first home in North Long Beach at 25.
